My, how time flies! I can remember when having a web site was the “smart” thing to do. Next thing I know, blogs became the popular thing and many clamored to put up a blog and began blogging. But that is now history, and today is today. All the talk today is of “Social Media” with Twitter and Facebook dominating the conversation. It’s the latest phase in online interaction, it’s the latest phase in community, and as you might expect, it’s beginning to catch the attention of entrepreneurs and business owners too.

Everyone agrees Twitter has come from out of nowhere, establishing itself as a new means of interactive communication in the mobile and online world. Movie Stars, athletes, news reporters and well known people from @MarthaStewart to @BrookeHogan to @JasonMraz to @LilyAllen and beyond, are all mad about Twitter.

However Twitter is far more intimate than that. Truth be told, Twitter is a local based connection tool too. More likely than not, your town government is on Twitter, your local TV and radio news, your local Fire Fighters, your favorite bookstore, your community college, even the guy that cut your hair last week. If they are not on Twitter now, it’s just a matter of time.

But there’s another audience making its claims on Twitter. It’s an undercurrent of a more serious nature whereby business owners (both large and small) including entrepreneurs and home-based businesses are successfully tapping the enormous potential of Twitter. When you witness companies like: @BestBuyRemix, @TravelOregon or @theBKlounge begin lining up on the Twitter bandwagon, it’s without doubt time to take notice.

Perhaps this “craze” boils down to the commonly known fact that a significant amount of business actually occurs in social gatherings, at cocktail parties, on the golf course, and at various other social events. Now, through Twitter it’s become possible, if not down right easy, to benefit from an online version of a non-stop 24 hour, 7 day a week cocktail party of unimaginable proportions.

It’s impossible to overlook some of these facts and stories:

  • How powerful is a reTweet? “Social network users are 3 times more likely to trust the opinions of peers over advertising when making purchase decisions.” ~JupiterResearch
  • “Unique visitors to Twitter increased 1,382 percent year-over-year, from 475,000 unique visitors in February 2008 to 7 million in February 2009, making it the fastest growing site in the Member Communities category for the month. Zimbio and Facebook followed, growing 240 percent and 228 percent, respectively.”
  • “Business owners age 30 to 39 are most likely to be using social media marketing (44.8%), followed by 20 to 29 year-olds (40.3%) and then 50 to 59 year-olds (38.7%).”

What’s the meaning of all this? It means that if you are an entrepreneur or in any business, make your plans soon to get over to Twitter and set up a free Twitter account.

Could it be that simple?

Well, not quite. Once you have your Twitter account opened, that’s when the mystery begins. It’s a very very rudimentary concept, but like playing poker, unless you have a clear strategy, you’ll soon be scratching your head.

Fortunately, there is help. Internet strategist and social media marketing expert, Dan Hollings has spent the past year researching and testing Twitter strategies for business. Along the way, Dan wrote 100 of the most popular Twitter tips found anywhere online. Next he created a browser toolbar for Mac or PC that puts about 240 Twitter tools, tips and apps within one-click of your Twitter activities. Recently, he released his remarkable Twitter training program called, “Twitter Twenius” (that’s Twitter-talk for genius).

Here is a sample Twitter tip, to get your juices flowing:

Socially bookmark your better Twitter postings (I’m talking individual tweet status pages). Yes they have SEO value. Services such as Twitchboard and Fleck Lite automate social bookmarking in different ways. You can of course go heavy-duty with services like Onlywire or SocialPoster.

Of course there’s significantly more to learn, however if you’re looking for viable strategies for making money using Twitter or a way to rev-up the Twitter afterburners on all your promotional campaigns whether in your local area or throughout the world, I highly recommend Twitter Twenius.
