At the time of writing it is fast approaching Easter in the fourth month of a brand new year 2009. It is also a stark reminder of one of the most common “diseases” suffered by unsuccessful people and that it excusitis.
It is the single difference between people who are perceived to be “going somewhere” and people who are barely scraping by. As a general rule you will find that the more success the individual, the less inclined he is to make excuses. People who have very few accomplishments are usually the ones who are ready to explain why they haven’t or can’t lose the weight, quit smoking or start their own business.
Excusitis is commonly found in four main categories:-
1. Health excusitis. My sponsor in my business has a great saying about health, “If you do not make time for exercise, make time for illness.” The fact is you should prioritise your health first and foremost, you can have all of everything else you want in life but if you do not have your health, you do not have anything. Having said that millions of people use bad health as an excuse to not reach their goals. You should incorporate good nutrition and exercise into your everyday until it becomes a habit.
2. Intelligence. “I’m not smart enough“ is the second common form of excusitis but as people will not really admit it openly most people suffer in silence from it. We often over estimate other’s brain power and under estimate our own. What really matters is not how much intelligence you have, it’s about how you use what you’ve got that counts. The way you think is much more important that what you know, my business mentor used to say “To a rocket scientist, rocket science is easy.”
3. Age. This is number three and is probably the most curable form of excusitis. There are cases of people becoming millionaires after the age of 100 and under 16 plus every age in between, age has nothing to do with not reaching goals, it’s just the way you view it yourself that holds the key. I remember a former work colleague being worried at turning 40 last year, I told her “after the age of 9 we are all in double figures, when you get to three numbers you will not care anyway.” Never look back on the years gone by, they are merely for reference not residence, always look ahead and make sure the best years are yet to come.
4. Luck. Accept the law of cause and effect, of course the next Lotto ticket could be you, but in reality most peoples “luck” are usually a result of preparation, planning and successful thinking that created a path to having more fortune. There really is no such thing as an overnight success but when you read some headlines it can seem that way.
Don’t let excuses get in your way this year, there is a fantastic song by Guy Sebastian called the Anthem of Why, it is perfect reminder of substituting the word “why” for “how”:-
Joe, lives with his folks at home
Smokes little plants he grows
Cool for a kid
But today is the big 3-0
It seems
All of his hopes and dreams
Got lost in habitual themes
Now he is crying
Tears of what could have been
He is saying “Why oh why
Did my life pass by?”
Could it be that all this time saying, “Why?”
You shoulda said, “How?”
Thirty candles you are blowing
None of which deserves a light
The only music you’ve been playin’
Is the Anthem of Why
Always dreaming, never doing
So they never did take flight
Still the music, that you’re playin’
Is the Anthem of Why
Stacey, dreamt of becoming a pop queen
Suddenly when she turned fifteen
Everything changed
She found out she had one on the way
And so she took all the posters of Britney
Mariah, Beyonce and Whitney
And with her dreams
She threw them all away
She was saying “Why oh why
If not for that night
Could it be that all this time saying, “Why?”
You shoulda said, “How?”
All the hopin’, all the wishin’
Girl, you traded for a night
And the music that you’re playin’
Is the Anthem of Why
Now you’re feelin’, all your dreamin’
Was just a waste of time
So the song that you are singing
Is the Anthem of Why
Always saying “Why oh why
Did my life pass by?”
Could it be that all this time saying, “Why?”
You shoulda said, “How?”
All the hopin’, all the prayin’
No, they never should have died
But they faded, when you traded how
For the Anthem of Why
Gotta dream it, gotta feel it
If you ever wanna fly
Never sing it, never play it
It’s the Anthem of Why
When you are next offering up an excuse as to “why” you have not followed through with your plans, ask yourself “how” and stop listening to your own excuses.
